Coverage Day Two (Olympic Day 6) | |
Oh did I mention that the
CBS Olympic website is chock full of browser stalling applets and little things that keep your connection dialing up randomly? I love you cbs. Whilst looking for pretty good Nagano websites, I found one by the guy that does securtiy for events like the olympics, David R. Marks. There's alot of photos on his page of him with important Florida celebrities that he does personal protection for. Besides being some kind of bodyguard for "someone" at the olympics (he is very discreet) one of his favorite quotes is "Just because the river is quiet, don't think the crocodiles have left."
I also forgot to mention that cbs included a special on a guy that makes plastic food as part of their "Intro to Japanese Culture" olympic coverage. He is the head guy of plastic sushi that you see in store windows. He also does sashimi, various broth dishes, drinks, and western food. Picabo street is quite a plucky gal. That about says it all. All i could really think about when i saw her is what would her roaming charges be on a cell phone call from the mountains of nagano when she was talking to her mom. And then i tried to feel moved while she stood on the box to get her medal but all i could muster was irritation while she lip synched the star. More skating practicing. Every single time i see boys skate, i can't help wondering when when when will they turn to professional stylists to help them select their skating outfits. I think they use professional skating stylists right now, who should all be secretly rounded up and put in a room with snowlets. There was one guy with a pretty passable disco queen red mesh shirt and studded belt...everyone else i saw (and this was practicing! all they do is practice in their outfits apparently-maybe i am missing something when i have to turn on dharma and greg and not be charmed and then go make dinner and be driven to actually turning tv off when they are whining on party of five and skating in gold lame lace up vest numbers in nagano) has been styled by tonya. that's what the next ibm loser commercial should be on, skating stylists and the influence tonya harding has had on them. It's not like the girls are immune, but in recent years from what i see, since our resident skating expert, 12 year old couch girl, watches all skating events morning noon and night, the girls are clueing in and we don't have to worry about them so much. Someone hasn't passed this on to the boys yet though. And i feel sort of dumb and trite bitching and moaning about their outfits because i think it's an integral part of skating and it's not like i run out and buy all my clothes from narciso rodriguez or anything, and skating outfits are such an easy target. I bet alot of Performance Art 101 poetry slams are devoted to bad skating outfits along with skinny-vogue-models-give-us-big-boned-girls-anoerexia nights which can be equally irritating even though i am a medium boned gal obessed with skinny waif models. But, as a devoted olympic coverage reporter, i do have to tune in and watch at least 30 seconds of those outfits and i can't stop being awed by the sheer weirdness of anyone who could possibly pick out something like that without a shred of irony. Unless i am missing the point and there is an incredible amount of irony that i am missing in figure skating and it is really a huge meditation on race, class and gender on ice cumulating in some scheme by the snowlets to turn all high school football fields into toxically refrigerated ice rinks? Tomorow's coverage will be a guest report from Karl.
